Additional Details
If the customer is adding part B during the Medicare General Enrollment Period (January 1-March 31) for a July 1 effective date, the SEP is available from April 1- June 30 for a July 1 effective date.
If the customer is adding part B due to a loss of credible coverage (ie, customer opted to delay part B in order to stay enrolled in their, or their spouses, group coverage), the SEP last for 3 months preceding the part B effective date.
Some Veteran’s opt out of Part B, when they turn 65 to avoid paying the Part B premium, because they feel that they don’t need Medicare Part B. They can always change their mind. If you encounter a person in this category, gently encourage them to contact the Social Security Administration to discuss the option of enrolling in to Part B and whether or not they would have to pay the Late Enrollment Penalty for Part B.
